Building Department InformationOverview: The Growing Dome is a geodesic structure used solely as a greenhouse. Typically, many building departments regard the Growing Dome as a temporary structure that does not require a building permit. Two reasons this classifies as a temporary structure: A concrete foundation is not needed (and not really recommended), and the Dome is designed to be disassembled and moved if needed. The structure is screwed and bolted together, and can be easily disassembled. The technical specifications are available on request. Ground Loading and Anchoring: Ground loading of the structure itself is in the region of 30-50 pounds per square foot. For this reason, coupled with the high structural integrity of the Dome framework, minimal foundation is required. The smaller Domes sit on a compacted gravel base and are anchored with two rebar stakes per wall section. Larger Domes have concrete piers or an insulated concrete foundation to provide secure anchoring. Massive footers are not required as a general rule. Foundation Insulation and Frost Heaving: The earth at the periphery of the Dome is heated by a solar powered hot air system whereby the hot air inside the greenhouse is circulated through pipes buried in the soil. Blueboard insulation is buried in the ground at the perimeter of the Dome during installation. This results in an insulated and heated foundation which has been found to minimize any frost heaving of the structure. Structural Analysis: A structural analysis and engineer's report of the 26’, 33’, 42’ & 51' diameter Growing Dome has been done. Reports available upon request. The Growing Dome structure is capable of withstanding winds up to 100 mph. |
