Unique
Features
1.
High Quality 5 Wall Glazing
The high quality POLYCARBONATE GLAZING is a clear, rigid translucent
covering that allows 65% light transmission. It resists breakdown
by ultraviolet light and harsh weather impacts, like hail. We
reduce the cost by using half sheets which would normally end
up in the landfill. The angle of the lid is specifically designed
for optimum winter growth. Most cold frames do not have this
feature.
2. North Wall Insulation
The unique design feature of the North Wall Insulation helps
keep “Junior” cozy during the unpredictable cold
nights and reflects light evenly onto the plants for maximum
growth throughout the day. Most cold frames get hot in the day
but at night lose all their heat and your plants can freeze.
3. Automatic Opening Window Vents
Solar powered actuators with wax filled pistons, allow the vent
(window) to open at a preset temperature, without the use of
any electricity. The window vents close automatically as the
temperatures drop, freeing you to go to work or vacation without
worry of your plants overheating or freezing.
4. Water Reservoirs
This unusual cold frame feature is a series of water reservoirs
that act as the “Power Pack”. The water mass keeps
the structure warm in the winter and cool in the summer creating
an optimum growing environment. Depending on your climate conditions
"Junior" will definitely extend your growing season
and potentially provide a space for year-round growth. We use
one gallon water jugs, but any dark colored water containers
would serve the same purpose.
5. Undersoil Heating/Cooling System
A solar panel produces electricity to power a fan which draws
warm air through pipes buried in the raised soil beds. Every
day when the sun shines, your soil is being heated! This same
system helps to cool the inside in the summer by drawing cooler
air through the same pipes, allowing the growing beds to retain
more moisture.
6. Insulated Foundation Wall
Growing Spaces “Junior” sits on a foundation wall
which raises the cold frame up above the snow. This wall is
insulated to prevent the soil in the growing beds from freezing.
The wall is lined with sheet metal on the inside and has a bottom
plate of pressure treated lumber or redwood for added longevity
also has a long lasting decay resistant siding.
7.
Perimeter Insulation
If you choose to
install this feature it prevents frost from penetrating under
the wall. It enables the soil mass to stay warmer during the
winter, further extending the growing season.
