More to Celebrate at Growing Spaces

New Shop, Growing Dome, and Landscaping

We had a year's break from Newsletters, but its time to catch up with the latest developments. We were blessed to purchase our new shop of 2500 sq. ft. from our landlords, Doug and Mosetta McInnis. They are so enthusiastic about us that they bought an 18 ft. Growing Dome. These things are irresistible.

We also installed Growing Spaces' own 22 ft. Demonstration Dome; so prospective dome owners can see an up and running dome in action. Its triangles are cut from recycled polycarbonate that would usually end up in the landfill. It performed abundantly all summer and fall producing huge crops of tomatoes and cucumbers, peppers, nasturtiums, lettuce, beans, etc.

We do not heat it to demonstrate its ability to grow all winter. At present we are growing lettuce, broccoli, nasturtiums, kale, arugula, collards, beets, mizuna, collards, cabbage, radish, parsley rosemary, and many other herbs.

The water lettuce, water hyacinth, parrot feather, and umbrella plant continue to flourish in the water tank. We also created a large berm to hide the adjacent industrial estate, which we landscaped with trees, shrubs, and an abundance of wildflowers. Our low consumption irrigation drip system proved of immense value in helping these plants get established.

Solar-powered Forklift

Growing Spaces is operating what may be the world's only solar-powered forklift. Realizing we would no longer be able to borrow our kind neighbors' forklift to load your dome kits onto the back of the trucks, we decided to buy our own. We purchased an electric forklift on eBay!! And had it shipped from New York. It was fun getting it off the truck; those things weigh over 6000 lbs. The batteries weigh in at 3000 lbs!!! It was plugged in for the initial charge-up, but never since.

We have 3 - 12 volt 50W solar panels in series to give a 36-volt system that keeps the batteries constantly topped up and ready to go. I should put an article in Solar Power Magazine, when I get time. Now working on a solar-powered heating system for our shop: stay posted.

Growing Spaces Expands Worldwide

The last year we continued our expansion by sending 2 more domes to the UK. We now have domes in 5 countries. Mexico, Canada, UK, Germany, and France, soon to be domes in Sweden and Italy with serious inquiries from Ireland, Australia, and South Africa. The cost of ocean freight is quite surprisingly reasonable, so that helps.

Worldwide Distributors We now have an established distributor for UK and Ireland with other individuals wanting to be our agents over there too.

At present, we are negotiating for agencies in France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Uzbekistan. Yes, really! The internet surely transcends national boundaries and serves to remind us that as global citizens we are all connected to each other.

New Products

After much persuasion we are now happy to offer our largest dome a 53 ft Diameter model.

We now are offering a solar powered cooling fan kit, shade cloth kits, solar fountain, and misting systems. Also, if you are interested in aquatic plants, we have a reasonable priced source for those.
