Lots to Celebrate at Growing Spaces

New Shop

For the past year, we at Growing Spaces have been bursting at the seems and tripping over each other at our present facility. Our wonderful landlord, Doug McGinnis, has been urging me to expand for the last three years. Finally, we agreed to let him build us a new shop and office complex. This will be twice the size of our existing shop and office and construction is proceeding rapidly. We hope to be operating from the new facility by the middle of September. We are planning that production will continue, uninterrupted, since the new shop is only 200 yards away from the current one. As part of the new shop complex, we are planning to have our own 22' Growing Dome®, using recycled plastic triangles for the glazing, as a demonstration of earth-friendly practices. Come visit us (plan to call ahead) at (970) 731-2120 or (800) 753-9333.

Massive Dome Complex in Northern Idaho

This spring we received our largest order ever - five 42' domes and two 22' domes. These domes were for a large project in Northern Idaho, which also included three monolithic domes. The largest of these was 150' in diameter. This makes our 42' dome look tiny! The visionary who is designing the complex is planning to use a ground heat pump for auxiliary heating in the dome during the winter. All the domes will have in-floor heating as well as the usual under-soil heating system.

While we're on the subject of auxiliary heating systems, a dome owner here in Pagosa Springs installed an auxiliary pool heater, consisting of two 4x8 hot water panels with a solar powered pump to circulate the heating fluid through a copper coil immersed in the water tank. The system contained antifreeze to compensate for the below freezing temperatures that we get 6-8 months of the year at night. Using this technology, the owner was able to increase the temperature of the tank by 20-30 degrees above normal, enabling his dome to remain above freezing without the use of propane or electricity.

We have a new dome owner near Crestone, Colorado who is looking at using geothermal water to increase the temperature in her dome.

We sure have a lot of creative dome owners! Please send us your stories of you have come up with an idea to share, or post them on the web forum.

Growing Spaces Expands Worldwide

We shipped our first dome kit to England this spring, which was successfully installed by the proud owner. At the time of this writing, another dome kit is on its way to France. Hopefully, this is the first of many growing dome kits to arrive in other countries. With the internet as one of our main marketing avenues, we constantly get inquiries from all over the world. Another Growing Dome® arrived in Alaska recently. We look forward to hearing how well it performs in the climate of Anchorage.

New Products

We have produced a new installation video, to be available on VHS and DVD formats. Another new video is the first in a series entitled, "Care of Your Dome". A new promotional video should be available shortly. The installation and promotional videos were produced by Michelle Church of Church Mouse Media in Fort Collins, Colorado. We highly recommend her work and you can find her on the web at www.churchmousemedia.com. She is very enthusiastic and affordable.

Solar fountains and watering systems are another of our new offerings. We can customize shade cloth for our dome owners, as well.
