Winter storms easily survived by Dome Greenhouses!

January 19,2007

Across the USA we have had reports of dome greenhouses effortlessly handling the challenging wintry weather of the last 2-3 weeks. In the Front Range of Colorado near Denver, these greenhouses have withstood up to 6-feet of snow, whereas hoop greenhouses have collapsed under the heavy snow load.

In Pagosa Springs, CO there have been temperature as low as -16°F and plants are still growing inside without extra heat. Most outdoor gardeners had lost their crops in early September due to early freezing temperatures, but the domes continued to produce tomatoes through early December without any extra heating!

The Growing Dome® is manufactured by Growing Spaces, LLC in Southern Colorado. It achieves this amazing strength and ability to withstand the cold due to its dome shape, excellent insulation, and passive solar design, which includes a large water tank to moderate the temperature during the cold nights.

The designer, Michael Parsons has been selling these solar greenhouses for seventeen years in the Rocky Mountains. A “purist” about energy-efficiency, he likes to emphasize the sustainability of his designs. But an added discovery over the years has increased interest in these dome spaces.

Many Baby Boomers are looking for retreat from the pace of modern life and the buzz of the media-driven world. Gardening has always been a form of therapy, but for this age group the added peace of a silent and secure space away from the house has become as attractive as the gardens and their enhancement.

“The miracle of stepping inside a warm, almost tropical environment, with two to four feet of snow outside, and our pipes frozen, is quite a delight,” states their neighbor, one of seven who own Growing Domes on Catchpole Drive, in Pagosa Springs.

Many people are unaware of the strength and weather resistance of dome structures. During hurricane Rita, when the beachfront homes in Florida were demolished, the only home left standing was a dome home. This came over the wire of the Associated Press, and then disappeared as soon as construction companies began making their bids for reconstruction. Perhaps, someday soon, the need for more permanent structures will bring attention again to Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic domes.

For the sunny climate of Colorado with this year’s record snows, Growing Spaces Growing Domes are a surprising success.
